Anticipation has been building for this first encounter between Vladimir Jurowski and the thrilling young performers of the Royal College of Music Symphony Orchestra, acclaimed for the brilliance and exuberance of their performances. The concert opens with two of Schnittke’s most attractive works including the enchanting, tongue-in-cheek Gogol Suite, commissioned by Yuri Lubimov in 1976 for a Gogol "spectacular" at the Moscow Taganka Theatre. In contrast Prokofiev’s staggering Sixth Symphony gradually builds from the composer’s painful recollections of war towards a pulsating conclusion that drew condemnation from the Stalinist regime.
This concert is promoted by the Royal College of Music
