The Royal College of Music welcomes the Moscow Conservatory Chamber Choir which, under charismatic director Boris Tevlin, has in just 15 years established itself as one of the leading Russian choirs. This concert opens with Schnittke’s sublime Concerto for Choir, widely regarded as one of the choral masterpieces of the 20th century. Based on words from the ‘Book of Lamentations’ by the Armenian poet and monk, Gregory of Narek, the melodic lines suggest those of Schnittke’s Russian predecessors Mussorgsky and Stravinsky, whilst the rapturous choral passages hint at the church music of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. The latter composer’s own miniature choral masterpieces feature in a second half of favourite Russian works from the last 200 years, which also includes Schnittke’s Three Sacred Hymns based on common prayer texts from Russian Orthodox Liturgy.

This concert is promoted by the Royal College of Music.
