<strong>Schnittke and Tchaikovsky</strong>
01 December 2009 7:30pm

Leonidas Kavakos violin
Antoine Tamestit viola
Gautier Capucon cello
Nikolai Lugansky piano

Schnittke String Trio
Tchaikovsky Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 50

Leonidas Kavakos is joined by world-renowned soloists Nikolai Lugansky, Gautier Capuçon and Antoine Tamestit to perform a programme that contrasts the troubled Romanticism of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio with the utterly nostalgic post-Shostakovich and post-Berg sound-world of Schnittke’s String Trio.

Both works were written in homage to a great musician: Tchaikovsky dedicated his trio to the pianist Nikolai Rubinstein and Schnittke's trio was composed in memory of Alban Berg on the 50th anniversary of the composer's death. Both Trios culminate in a return to the very source of all sound, silence.

This concert will take place in Southbank Centre's Queen Elizabeth Hall.

This concert is part of Leonidas Kavakos: An Artist in Focus and the International Chamber Music Season at Southbank Centre.
