Acclaimed pianist Rustem Hayroudinoff joins principal string players of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in three classics of the chamber music repertoire. Brahms’s C minor Trio is dramatic and sonorous, anticipating the Double Concerto of the following year. Schubert’s Trout Quintet – so-called because it includes a set of variations on the composer’s well-known song of that name – is a work of holiday relaxation, full of the joy of music-making in friendly company. Shostakovich’s 1940 Piano Quintet is one of his chamber music masterpieces, moving from the intensity of its opening Prelude and Fugue, by way of a brittle Scherzo and a cool Intermezzo with a passionate climax, to a more relaxed Finale.
