Copland, Tower, Gershwin and Dvořįk
23 February 2013 7:30pm

Copland Fanfare for the Common Man
Joan Tower Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman
Copland Piano Concerto
Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue
Dvořįk Symphony No. 9 (From the New World)

Marin Alsop conductor
Garrick Ohlsson piano

Just as Antonķn Dvořįk lived the American dream through his touching symphonic hymn to the slave songs and spirituals of America, so Aaron Copland expressed the hope of his countrymen in the shining optimism of his Fanfare for the Common Man – heard here alongside Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman. Two slices of pianistic Americana complete the programme: the slinky blue notes and thumping jazz rhythms of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and the touching, playful simplicity of Copland’s beautiful Piano Concerto. Marin Alsop and Garrick Ohlsson are on hand to give this concert an authentic American touch.
