Mendelssohn Hebrides OvertureMozart Clarinet Concerto
Beethoven Symphony No. 3 (
Eroica)
Jaime Martín conductor
Nicholas Carpenter clarinet
When Beethoven gave birth to what is arguably his most important symphony, he didn’t just feel the art of music changing, he felt his own body changing too. The composer had sensed his hearing failing, and in an emotional letter to his brothers, declared himself determined to overcome the challenges that lay at his feet. The
Eroica Symphony is the musical manifestation of that determination: a self-propelling, heroic and inspiring tour-de-force whose concert hall effect borders on the overpowering. It stands in utter contrast to the autumnal bronzes and browns of Mozart’s late Clarinet Concerto, a piece from the dusk of the composer’s career that feels almost like a goodbye.
