When Benjamin Britten saw for himself the damage to the city of Coventry after a wartime bombing raid, he set about writing the piece that he hoped ‘would be remembered longest’ after his own death. In his monumental
War Requiem, the composer pits three contrasting musical ensembles against one another: the chilling innocence of boys’ voices meets the outspoken, acerbic protests of two soldier-like figures and a large chorus and orchestra, through which are channelled the traditional expressions of suffering and deliverance. The tense, angry and yet cautiously optimistic work that resulted has lost none of its power or relevance half a century on.
Please note there will be no interval during this performance.
