CD: Sibelius: Symphonies 5 & 6 / Berglund

JEAN SIBELIUS (1865–1957)
Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 82
Symphony No. 6 in D minor, Op. 104
The Swan of Tuonela

Finnish conductor Paavo Berglund (1929–2012) was one of the last conductors with a direct personal connection to Sibelius, and the composer encouraged Berglund early in his conducting career. Berglund’s Sibelius performances with the London Philharmonic Orchestra had a special quality, shown in the Second and Seventh Symphonies already released on the LPO label (LPO-0005), and these live concert recordings allow the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies to take flight.

CD: Tchaikovsky: Symphonies 4 & 5 / Jurowski

Pyotr Ilyich TCHAIKOVSKY (1840-1893)
Symphony No. 4
Symphony No. 5

Throughout his life, Tchaikovsky was preoccupied with the idea of Fate, describing it as ‘that fatal power which prevents one from attaining the goal of happiness’. This dark force haunts both the Fourth and Fifth symphonies, which each juxtapose some of Tchaikovsky’s most beautiful and graceful melodies with music of intense power and dark despair.
Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski continues his journey through the composer’s six symphonies, leading the London Philharmonic Orchestra in these live concert recordings.
